The warmhearted story in this charming picture book awakens young readers to the superpower-like wonders of multilingualism. The story revolves around Dylan, an American boy whose parents' international origins have exposed him at home to Portuguese and Ukrainian in addition to his native English. These verbal skills prove quite handy when Dylan and his bilingual best friend Emma (who speaks English and Zulu) go in search of his recently acquired pet chicken Kiki, who wandered off while they were distractedly playing a game. Through a combination of smart sleuthing and cross-cultural communication, the polyglot pair locates Kiki at the home of a man who appears to know no English, but fortunately, speaks Portuguese, one of Dylan's languages.
