Author Kevin Brougher's exceptional skill at crafting cleverly amusing rhymes and Jessica Warrick's pitch-perfect artwork are key elements in why this update to the classic children's story captivates kids from the get-go! That the story hews fairly close to the original folktale (but with a happier, child-centric ending) proved to be a wonderful asset as well. After all, what young reader wouldn't root for a vulnerable runaway cookie who bravely, even giddily, taunts the humans and other critters who take up in pursuit of the little guy? As for staying power, this upbeat little tome has it in spades. Children find the changing scenery and gentle suspense that accompany each encounter (will he be eaten, will he escape?) to be entirely enchanting even after they have read or heard Grandpa Kevin's...The Gingerbread Man many times over!
