The word 'charming' doesn't even begin to convey the appeal of this delightful board book for young readers. Illustrator Charles Reasoner has a knack for composing images that conjure warmth and elicit smiles, creating a lively universe on every page. The deftness with which he conveys both story and emotion, whether it be through an owl hurriedly flying through the air to join his family or the star's diamond-like twinkling, is a marvel in and of itself. The text is that of the beloved children's rhyme, but the illustrations tell the story of a family of owls out to catch sight of that twinkling star. The physical design of the book is also something to be treasured. The thick, sturdy cover and pages are cut in such a way that a series of tabs along the right border each reveals a different illustration, telling a mini-story all their own and allowing even very small hands to make their way. Most tellingly, readers both young and old displayed a sense of wonder while taking in its pages.
