One doesn't entirely expect an album intended to inspire and teach children about the mysteries of the universe to be drenched in the sort of high-level musicianship and first-rate songwriting found on The Mighty Sky. The lyrics alone are something to marvel at for the easy way they incorporate scientific concepts while sounding natural and catchy. The vocals and harmonies are exceptional throughout, and the songwriting encompasses a wide range of styles, from folk, bluegrass, and a cappella to full-out rock & roll and the blues. The energy and rhythms are often irresistibly danceable (try staying seated during Zodiacial Zydeco), and frequently interlaced with humor (check out the rousing Test, Re-test & Verify, a faux lofty paean to the scientific method). And therein lies one of the many keys to this album's success - taking a seemingly weighty subject and making it buoyant, playful, and wildly entertaining.
