While retaining the best qualities of traditional color by number, Pixel Pictures introduces features that make it a new and different experience. For one thing, each page consists of a cleverly designed grid containing 616 little numbered squares (pixels) to be filled in according to the color key. One of the side effects of this pixelated approach is that it does not become clear to the artist what he or she is drawing until the picture is almost finished. That suspense factor adds intrigue and interest to the process, while the coloring in of many small spaces brings color sense and hand-eye coordination to a whole new level. Add to that the fact that the artist himself decides which colors go with which numbers by filling in the blank color key at the bottom of each page before starting to draw. Each Pixel Pictures book has a different theme (Retro Robots, Pretty Princess, Funny Faces, . . . ) and contains 18 sheets, including 6 'create your own' pages in which the artist also determines up front exactly what the image to be colored in will be.
