Quest for Arete (pronounced ARE-a-Tay) is a highly imaginative game in which players become apprentice sorcerers who use magical elements to compete in duels of honor. The exceedingly well-written instructions, also known as the Apprentice's Guide to Mastery of the Elements, detail two types of play. Quest for Arete Rummy is an easy-to-learn game through which players develop approaches to organizing elements and combining them into spells. Element names and symbols on the cards are borrowed from the periodic table of elements, a fine touch that adds an educational boost to game-play that already aptly encourages critical thinking and evaluative skills. The second type of play, dueling, can be relatively simple or considerably more elaborate depending on players' experience level, and therein lies a good deal of fun. Players intelligently customize their decks and incorporate facets of play such as spell interaction, defensive cancellation, character strengths and weakness, house affiliations, and spell attachments.
