One of the challenges parents face each year is how best to occupy their kids over the summer, optimally with a combination of fun activities that support academic progress. Brain Chase, a five week online summer learning challenge for 2nd through 8th graders, is designed to do just that. That the program is conceived as a real-life treasure hunt is both motivating and entertaining. Weekly animated video segments follow the adventures of Mae Merriweather and friends as they hunt for relics and provide clues to the location of the real-life treasure. Access to episodes requires kids to complete four tasks weekly - read online for 15 minutes per day, earn 10,000 energy points on Khan Academy, complete writing or language assignments, and complete a bonus challenge. Along the way, kids receive exciting adventure tools in the mail to help them with their quest. For the Grand Prize winner who pinpoints the treasure's location, the potential real-life value is considerable (see brainchase.com for details).
